General World Cup Thread Empty General World Cup Thread

Post by Vic Taylor Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:21 pm

This is a thread to discuss anything to do with the World Cup. Also, instead of having match threads for separate World Cup matches, this is one thread where all the matches, at whatever stage, can be discussed.

Don't forget to enter our World Cup prediction game and if your team gets knocked out, please don't kill anyone. Razz

Can we chat generally about the World Cup aswell? Please?

Like Drogba possibly missing out, or like Ferdinand going home and being shite rather that staying in South Africa and being shite Laughing

What did everyone think of the first game?

I was expecting SA to beat Mexico, but Mexico were by far the better team imo, and SA got rather lucky with their goal and the following chances they got.

Good game I thought. Mexico played pretty much the same as they did against England. Lots of passing and endeavour but nee fucker on the end to finish it off. Thought the SA goal was a cracker myself, although overall the result was probably fair I would say.

Anyone feeling underwhelmed by the World Cup so far? Hopefully it is because teams don't want to lose their first game, but the standard has been pretty shit to be fair, in my opinion Wink

Must be gutting for Slovakia, to go through the entire second half leading and lose two points in the final moments.

Slovakia's goal was offside, so it was fair to end 1-1 as Slovakia was better.

Aah, that. I think it was ok. He already had a yellow and decided to do the same foul that got him the first card, again. Everyone else who made the same foul got a card as well.
Now, I didn't watch his first booking, but according to the commentaries it was the same foul twice.

And MY GOD! What is wrong with England?!? confused

Nah, it wasn't the same foul. The first one he ran behind the player with the ball and accidently clipped his heels. Nothing he could have done about it. Second foul he tried to get his foot round from behind and tackle the player, but missed the ball.

As for England... Painful just doesn't describe it. Sad

Lots of things. I'm really angry with them, but won't critise them for you English in here not to get furious on me. Razz

Anyway, they don't have motivation to play for their own country, but they are dieing to play for clubs.

Disagree, how many goal has Bent got for England?

The problem isn't the scoring of goals, well it is, but it has been perpetuated by team not creating chances. If chances aren't created then nee fecker is going to score goals, aside from a special individual goal etc, and that kind of thing isn't in Bent's locker.

I do agree he should have gone to the WC, but to suggest he would have got the goals for England, something he has failed to do in his career to date, is folly.

I think that was a tongue in cheek comment, Sy. Razz

I think we could get past Germany, though we'll have to play better than we did the other night. Even though everyone's saying we played well, it's only in comparison to our earlier matches, which we couldn't really do worse than.

I knaa, just wanted to lay my cards on the table Wink

I think we'll struggle, athough we do seem to play better against better opposition, so I maintain hope. Would be a nice boost if Scweinsteiger, Ozil, and Lahm stayed injured Razz

What is Beckenbaur banging on about anyway? About the state of the English game, and lack of English players being the problem for us? Hmm....

    Klose (Polish)
    Podolski (Polish)
    Ozil (Turkish)
    Trochowski (Polish)
    Cacau (Brazilian)

Plus there are others aswell. So, Mr Beckenbaur, what exactly is the problem with our all English team compared to your pilfered team of non-domeciles lol!

English problem is players motivation. They are so full of everything: media attention, money, fame...so they don't have motivation to play for their own country.

I watch EPL week in, week out and I know how Lampard and Gerrard play. But, looking them playing for England they are just concentrating on taking care of their legs, so they don't get injured, so they could play for their respective clubs. It's shameful TBH. (Those two are just example, thoug I think couple of players do play with their heart: Heskey, Johnson and Milner).

Nowadys, only players from 'small' nations play with their heart for their national teams...and that is just for someone to see them so they could get a good transfer and contract. Again, shameful.

The new rule in EPL, I don't think it'll change everything. It's just for them the throw smoke granade to the public Very Happy so they could think now our English players will get a chance. Hell no! Rule sucks. Still they will buy flairy southern players and all that. EPL is by far the best, but not the natinal team, which is not good given that England is 'mother' of football.

Enough from me. Very Happy It's all about the money I guess, eh...

    Very Happy
